On Sunday, December 11, Griggsville-Perry High School Student Council members and other high school students volunteered to spend the evening at Wal-Mart in Pittsfield. These students were given a card with a family number on it and a gender and age of a child. There was also a small list of interests and items that the child would like and sizes for clothes. The students set out on a mission in the store. Thoughtfully, they chose clothes and toys especially for the child or children they were assigned. Then, they headed for the check-out and lined their carts up. There were Barbie dolls and Tonka trucks piled high.
Now why were they doing this? The group had been running an Adopt-A-Family program for Christmas. Families who were struggling financially and needed assistance with Christmas presents, and who live in the school district, were able to apply for the program. They were taking donations and sponsors to adopt the children of these families, in order to buy Christmas gifts. They wanted to help provide a Christmas for children in the district who may not have been able to have one otherwise. This year, over 100 kids were sponsored by donations of items, and donations of money that the student council group was able to use to purchase items.
Our school district thanks our charitable community and its high school students for their time and generosity!! A special thank you to Ruth Anne Liehr for organizing this Christmas Family drive and to Mrs. Lightle and the student council members for shopping.
