We want you to know:
On Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Board of Education of Griggsville-Perry School District #4 will conduct a public hearing regarding the waivers of the following five legal school holidays: Martin Luther King (third Monday in January), Abraham Lincoln (February 12), Casimir Pulaski (first Monday in March), Christopher Columbus (second Monday in October), and Veterans’ Day (November 11). The enactment of P.A. 96-640 states that the Illinois State Board of Education no longer must approve the Public School Calendar waivers. The public hearing will begin at 6:45 p.m. and conclude at 7:00 p.m.
In order to waive a public school holiday, the educational entity must recognize the person or persons honored by the holiday through instructional activities conducted on that day or, if the day is not used for student attendance, on the first school day preceding or following that day.
During the public hearing, Griggsville-Perry Board of Education and administration will propose waiving all five holidays: Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, and Casimir Pulaski Day. Possible alternative uses for these days will be student attendance, school improvement planning, teacher inservice, teacher institute day, or parent-teacher conferences. This approval does not mean that the district is or will be automatically planning to attend school on these days; the approval simply offers the district more flexibility in its future school calendars to substitute holiday recognition dates or to better schedule to meet the needs of its students in a positive and educationally sound manner. Comments and/or testimony will be taken from educators and parents about the proposal during the hearing.
The public hearing will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2012 from 6:45 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the board room at the Griggsville-Perry Elementary/High School at 202 North Stanford in Griggsville. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Andrea Allen at 833-2352.
