ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION

Thirty credits are required for graduation. Each student is required to register for eight courses per semester unless special arrangements are made with the administration.

    CORRESPONDENCE POLICY:

The superintendent and principal may approve a maximum of two credits per semester through correspondence, night classes, or summer school from accredited institutions. The Superintendent and Principal must approve course content, institution where taken, and all other factors insuring proper credit is earned. Approval is to be granted in hardship situations or when other extenuating circumstances occur. This policy is not to be used solely for the purpose of facilitating early graduation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

English

English I

Grade Level: 9

This course provides a good introduction to both oral and written analysis of literature, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and a class study of the novel. Projects, presentations, and researching will be practiced. There will be lessons on grammar, mechanics, and essay writing. Throughout the entire course, there will be a focus on reading strategies and tools to improve reading throughout all content areas. VocabuLit Level I worksheets are studied each week to improve vocabulary, word parts, and the use of context clues. This is also a writing intensive course.

 

English II

Grade Level: 10

Prerequisites: English I

This course is a continuation of all aspects of literature, grammar, and essay writing. A variety of literature is studied including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. There will be an extensive class study of a novel and Shakespearean play, “Julius Caesar.” The students will engage in several presentations and projects that include researching and using the MLA format of writing. All reading strategies are practiced during various lessons. Vocabulary/Lit Level J worksheets are studied each week to improve vocabulary, word parts, and context clues. This is also an intensive writing level course.

 

English III

The major objective of this class is to provide juniors with an overview of American Literature. Throughout the year, there will be emphasis on essay writing, reading strategies, and literature. Grammar and composition skills are also reinforced by the step by step development of a research paper using the MLA style of writing.

 

English IV

Prerequisites: English I, II, and III

Students in this class will explore multiple genres of literature, including poetry, drama (in the form of a Shakespeare play), and the novel. Students will also produce a literary analysis essay and an argumentative research paper.

 

 

AP English Language and Composition

Following the College Board’s suggested curriculum designed to parallel college-level English courses, AP English Language and Composition courses expose students to prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. These courses emphasize the interaction of authorial purpose, intended audience, and the subject at hand, and through them, students learn to develop stylistic flexibility as they write compositions covering a variety of subjects that are intended for various purposes.

 

Mathematics

Algebra I

Algebra I provides a formal development of the algebraic skills and concepts necessary for students to succeed in advanced courses. In particular, the instructional program in this course provides for the use of algebraic skills in a wide range of problem-solving situations. The concept of function is emphasized throughout the course. Topics include: (1) operations with real numbers, (2) linear equations and inequalities, (3) relations and functions, (4) polynomials, (5) algebraic fractions, and (6) nonlinear equations. 

 

 

Geometry:

Grade Level: 9-10

Prerequisites: Algebra I.

This course pays particular attention to the nature of proofs. Students are encouraged to think of geometry as a logical system of thought. Continuous review of Algebra I level math is embedded in the curriculum. Emphasis on geometric figures and how they relate to the real world is taught through word problems, photographs, and diagrams. Beginning trigonometry will be taught as well. Students should have a geometry “kit” consisting of a compass, protractor, colored pencils, and a ruler.

 

Algebra II:

Grade Level: 10-11

Prerequisites: Geometry with a C- or better or with instructor and administrative approval

Algebra II is a continuation of Algebra I although in greater detail. Trigonometry introduced in Geometry will be expanded upon. College bound students and those planning to take Physics or Chemistry should plan to take this class. This class may be taken concurrently with Chemistry. This class may also be taken concurrently with Geometry with administrative and instructor approval.

 

Statistics:

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisites: Geometry

This course presents the basic concepts of statistics taught through definitions, graphs, tables, probability models, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. These are all concepts that would be taught in elementary statistics course in college. This course is recommended for college-bound students and can be taken concurrently with Algebra II, Precalculus, or Calculus with administrative and instructor approval

 

Discrete Mathematics:

Grade Level: 10-12

In this course students will explore concepts in abstract math. Topics include election theory, fair division, matrices, business and consumer mathematics, and graph theory. Can be taken concurrently with Algebra II, Precalculus, or Calculus with administrative and instructor approval.

 

Precalculus:

Prerequisites: Algebra II with a B- or better or with instructor and administrative approval

PreCalculus is a class that looks at mathematical functions and relationships. First semester will cover topics of advanced algebra including exponential functions, logarithmic functions, polynomial, rational functions. A complete treatment of trigonometry involving graphing and analysis will be covered second semester.

 

 

Calculus:

Prerequisites: Precalculus with a B- or better or with instructor and administrative approval

In this course students will begin with limits, the basis of calculus. The rest of the first semester will move through derivatives and applications of derivatives. The focus of second semester will go over integration and application of integration. Review of content from Precalculus and Algebra II will be scattered throughout as needed.

 

 

Agriculture

Introduction to Agriculture

Grade Level: 9-10

This orientation course provides an opportunity for students to learn how the agricultural industry is organized.  Topics include animal science, plant science, horticulture, natural resources, agribusiness management, agricultural mechanics, food science, and environmental science.  Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus.  Participation in the FFA student organization activities and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects are an integral part of the Agriculture classroom.  Students will be required to maintain an individual SAE project (record book) and attend certain FFA events.  Individual Ag shop projects (approved by the instructor) are requirements of this course.  Students will be responsible for associated fees for their own projects.

 

Veterinary Technology

Grade Level: 10-12

 This course develops management and conservation skills in understanding the connection between agriculture and natural resources. Student knowledge and skills are developed in: understanding natural resources and its importance; fish, wildlife, and forestry management and conservation; and exploring outdoor recreational enterprises.  Hunting and fishing as a sport, growing and managing tree forests, and outdoor safety education will be featured.   Career exploration will be discussed including:  park ranger, game warden, campground manager, forester, conservation officer, wildlife manager, and related occupations.  Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus.  Participation in FFA student organization activities and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects is an integral course component for leadership development, career exploration and reinforcement of academic concepts.

 

 

Horticulture Production and Management

Grade Level: 11-12

Prerequisite: Completion of Basic Agricultural Science

This advanced course offers instruction in both the floriculture and landscape areas of horticulture.  Units of study include plant identification, greenhouse management, culture of greenhouse crops, care and handling of cut flowers, and floral design.  Other landscape design, installation, and maintenance; horticulture mechanics; nursery management; and turf production.  Agribusiness in this course will cover topics such as: operating a horticulture business, pricing work, advertising, and sales.  Students will be required to maintain an individual SAE project/record book and attend certain FFA events.  Individual Ag shop projects approved by the instructor are requirements of this course.  Students will be responsible for associated fees for their own project.  Each student is required to work during the Plant Sale in early May.

 

Natural Resources Conservation Management

This advanced course focuses on the knowledge, hands-on skills, and workplace skills applicable to construction in the agricultural industry.  Major units of instruction include: personal safety, hand tools, power tools, blue-print reading, construction skills in carpentry, wood-working, surveying, and concrete.  Careers such as agricultural engineering, carpentry, plumbing, electrician, concrete and block laying, finishing, safety specialists, and other related occupations will be examined.  Students will be required to maintain an individual SAE project/record book and attend certain FFA events.  Individual Ag shop projects (approved by the instructor) are requirements of this course.  Students will be responsible for associated fees for their own project.

 

Agriculture Mechanics

This course will concentrate on expanding students’ knowledge and experience with agriculture mechanics utilized in the agriculture industry.  Units of instruction include: personal safety, fabrication, maintenance, welding, internal combustion engines, wiring, hydraulics, and employability skills.  Careers such as agriculture construction engineer, welder, equipment designer, parts manager, safety inspector, and other related occupations will be examined.  Improving workplace skills will be a focus.  Students will be required to maintain an individual SAE project/record book and attend certain FFA events.  

 

Computers and Fine Arts

Media Literacy

Students in this class will study the origins and merging of mass media across movies, television, recorded music, and the internet. Students will produce their own short-form media (such as YouTube videos, podcasts, and more) as a means of exploring these topics.

Speech

Students will learn how to prepare for public speaking, speech organization, improvisational skills, and different delivery styles. Students should expect to make short videos where they practice their speech before the final presentation in class. The number of speeches and use of partners will depend on the number of students enrolled in the class.

 

Yearbook Journalism

Students will learn feature writing, photography skills, page design, and business skills that will lead up to producing the yearbook. Students should expect to take photos of multiple sporting events after school as part of their grade. Students should expect to interview and prepare articles as part of the yearbook package. Students should expect to complete brief writing as part of the school newspaper.

 

 

Computer Applications

The course covers many topics including the Internet, Big Data and Privacy, and Programming and Algorithms.

Science and Global Issues makes biology come alive in your classroom. Each unit immerses the students in an issue that provides a realistic context that relates science to sustainability. Students ultimately propose a course of action in the scenario developed in each unit, citing scientific evidence to support their proposal and addressing the trade-offs associated with the suggested course of action. Students see the relevance of what they are studying to their own lives and how it impacts their environment and the planet. Field-tested across the country, the activities in Science and Global Issues have a proven track record of engaging students in scientific inquiry. With built-in literacy support, an embedded formative assessment system, and a comprehensive and flexible inquiry approach Science and Global Issues helps ALL students gain a deep understanding of biology.

This course features four units of study as follows:

Genetics-Phenotype, genotype, traits, DNA replication, mutations, protein synthesis, gene expression Mitosis, meiosis, genetic engineering.

Evolution-Levels of biodiversity, introduction to phylogeny, evolutionary processes and natural selection, speciation, evidence for natural selection.

 

Anatomy & Physiology

This health occupations course gives an overview of the different areas associated with health sciences and health technology. It covers health-care systems and trends, careers, ethics, terminology and basic anatomy, diversity, nutrition, and job-seeking skills. This course is a preparatory class for students who are interested in a profession as a health-care worker. In addition, it is good preparation for anyone interested in working in the medical field, public health, safety, etc.

Computer-based and traditional laboratory techniques are used to obtain, organize and analyze data. Conclusions are developed using both qualitative and quantitative procedures. Topics include, but are not limited to: measurement, atomic structure, electron configuration, the periodic table bonding, gas laws, properties of liquids and solids, solutions, stoichiometry, reactions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and nuclear chemistry.

A study of American History concentrated from the 1850’s to present day is taught and learned by the students. Pre and posttests will be used to help determine the growth and needs of the students. Contemporary U.S. Issues

History is being made around the world everyday, learn to be informed on the events that affect you, your country, and the world. In this class, we will be exploring how to research current events and issues, the professional practice of journalism, media literacy and bias, politics, controversial issues, and the important news events of the day. As Columbus first met the Taino people in the Bahamas, the stage would be set for two very different worlds to collide and coalesce into what would become the Americas. How did this meeting of cultures change the world, and how did the two hemispheres influence each other in philosophy, government, and ways of life? In this class, we will use 1492 as a starting point and follow the impact of the Columbus discovery, learning about the colonial system, trade and slavery, Native American history, the American Revolution, and early U.S. history. 

 

Geography

Geography is the study of our world, not only the political and physical characteristics, but the study of people, cultures, and environments. In this class, students will engage in learning about different regions and countries around the world and the aspects that make them unique; their histories, economies, cultures, and governments, as well as the physical geography that significantly impacts how people developed and live. This class will help develop skills such as research, reading, writing, map reading, and using technology to investigate the world.

The federal and Illinois State Constitutions are studied in depth in the first quarter into the second quarter. Both tests must be passed in order to fulfill graduation requirements along with the class as a whole. Current events are used to help exemplify both federal and state applications in class discussions. Also within the course students will have opportunities to study local and state history, not available in U.S. History class.

The class is an introduction to the study of psychology and the study of alternate therapies such as yoga. The course also includes the study of human behavior and mental processing are investigated through the philosophies of psychology, memory, learning, perception, sensation, consciousness, and abnormal behaviors. Classroom experiments and activities help the student to acknowledge and experience the specific behaviors. A reading and study of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is used as an example of how the mental patients were treated at one time and the perceptions people have of the mentally ill. As a literary work, students are exposed to literary strategies. The class is suggested if the student intends to take a more advanced class at a higher level of study.

 

Sociology

This class is a multi-cultural study of the social behavior of the human being in relation to other individuals and groups. Topics such as philosophies of sociology, culture, deviance, maturation of the individual, influences of the environment and useful reasons for studying sociology are covered. A reading and study of Kite Runner is used as an example of cultural differences, democracy, dictatorial societies, and environmental influences upon the individual. Spanish I

The course is offered to any student interested in studying the Spanish language. The fundamentals of vocabulary, verb conjugation, sentence structure, conversation skills, writing, and reading are all practiced. By the end of the first year, students are able to hold a rudimentary conversation and answer questions in the target language.

This course is a continuation of Spanish I. We start at the point left off from the previous year. The starting point will be based on the ending point of the prior year. More emphasis is put on vocabulary, verb conjugation, and more advanced sentence structure conversation, writing, and reading skills. Projects are used to apply skills learned and conversation is used to practice fluency and vocabulary. Students should consider their Spanish I grade when thinking about registering for Spanish II.

 

Spanish III

Continued competence is the goal of Spanish III. The class continues from the ending point of Spanish II. All elements are more advanced along with additional verb tenses. Projects are used as a main assessment tool along with testing.

A more independent study is introduced into Spanish IV along with guided teaching. Students taking Spanish IV are looking to test out of college courses and requirements or continuing with a minor or major in foreign language. Driver’s Education

Students who take driver’s education courses in high school must receive a passing grade in at least eight courses during the previous two semesters prior to enrolling in driver’s education. Students must be at least 14.5 years old and must have paid the additional driver education fee prior to the first day of class.

This class has both a classroom phase and a behind-the-wheel phase. The classroom phase is designed to develop a good attitude toward safe driving and knowledge in the following areas: Buying, caring for, and operating a car; insurance; rules of the road; natural and man-made laws; alcohol; knowledge applicable to driving in common and unusual situations. Behind-the-wheel instruction is designed to provide experience in city and country driving, driving in traffic, defensive driving, parking and special maneuvers, and driving under adverse conditions. Culmination of the driving experience is taking the Illinois Driver’s License exam. Students earning an “A” or “B” (combined score from both the classroom and behind-the-wheel semesters) are exempt from taking the driver’s test at Pittsfield, unless their birthday is on one of the random dates selected by the state. The students must hold White Slips for at least 9 months prior to attempting to receive a driver’s license. Parents must supervise for at least 50 hours of driving for their child (10 of these hours after dark), record times, dates, driving experience, and sign the document to be presented at the time of taking the driving test at Secretary of State’s Office.

Required documents: Certified birth certificate, original Social Security card, two pieces of mail delivered to the student by the U.S. Postal Service, and a $20.00 check payable to the Secretary of State for White Slip Application.

 

Health

Physical Education

All students are required to take physical education unless they have a written medical excuse from their doctor.

Physical Education provides each person with several opportunities—from assessment of fitness levels and consequent activities that will strengthen personal weakness to development of lifetime skills and understanding enabling the student to lead a full and productive life while in school and afterward. The physical education program consists of coed classes. Physical education is a part of the total process of education that utilizes games, sports, dance, and other vigorous activities to help the individual achieve the goals of education.

Students must dress in physical education uniforms to be purchased at school. Students who do not dress or are a medical excuse (doctor’s note) will be given an alternate assignment. If a student needs to be excused from physical education for more than two consecutive days, a doctor’s note is required. Combination locks are issued at the beginning of the year for a five dollar fee. If the lock is returned at the end of the school year in the same condition as issued, the fee will be refunded. On occasion, field trips may be scheduled. Possible trips include golf, bowling, fishing, etc. Students must have paid their activity fee in order to participate.

 

Office Aide
