Operation Teen Safe Driving demonstration

by Leah Wilke

January 21, 2010

Members of Griggsville-Perry High School's Operation Teen Safe Driving (OTSD) held a demonstration during half time of the Lady Tornadoes basketball game Thursday night, January 21 to demonstrate what an impaired driver looks like when he or she thinks she is sober but is actually legally drunk. OTSD not only teaches teens about safe driving but it also places strong emphasis on making good decisions.

OTSD members set up the gym with cones as contestants wore simulated "beer goggles" to give the impression of driving while intoxicated. Participants were paired up as partners and given a scooter to drive. The driver pushed their partner in and out of cones to a finish line. It was easy for the crowd to see how the goggles obviously distorted the judgment of the participants.

After the groups finished, OTSD threw out prizes to those who participated and those who watched the demonstration.
