Middle School Implements Program to Help Students' Academic Abilities

From Principal Jeff Borune:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This year the middle school will be implementing a “Response to Intervention” (RtI) program designed to help students improve their abilities in academic areas in which they need help.  RtI is a common program in many schools, and research has shown it to be an effective way to raise the achievement levels of all students.

Three times a year we screen all students in the area of reading and math.  This testing, which is not new to our school, gives us a snapshot of student strengths and weaknesses.

The middle school schedule has been tweaked to create much smaller groups for the purpose of providing targeted instruction in areas of need.  As an added bonus, this time will also allow for students who are already achieving at their grade-level to engage in enrichment activities to stretch their skills.  Students’ progress will be assessed regularly so that we may continually understand which skills need the most work.

We are looking forward to our grade-level RtI teams working together to create positive learning experiences for our students.  We feel confident that this targeted skill-building will help fulfil our school mission of teaching our students essential skills they will need as they progress through their educational careers.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss any questions or concerns you have about this program.
