Drill: Active Shooter Drill on Sep. 23rd

On Wednesday, September 23, 2020, Griggsville-Perry Schools in conjunction with the Pike County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency agencies will conduct active shooter drills at both the Griggsville and Perry buildings. These drills are required on an annual basis and will better prepare staff and students to respond to an intruder event and help the District and local law, fire, and emergency services determine strengths and weaknesses in our plans.

This year the drills will be structured in such a way as to ensure the safety and health of students and staff in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The response team will use these drills to evaluate their actions and reactions and to fine-tune their response in real-life situations.

Both drills will take place in the morning—Perry first and then Griggsville. Once each drill is completed, students will finish the day as usual.  They will have the opportunity to discuss what happened and then return to their normal routine.

It is understandable that some will have concerns about this drill.  We respect your concerns, but we need to practice and prepare our students with the hope that we NEVER have to use this. This is a learning opportunity for the district to be better prepared to keep students safe in any circumstance.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school at 217-833-2352.

While intruder events are statistically very rare, we take the safety of our students and staff very seriously.  It is important for students to understand that we are practicing just as we do for other rare events like fires and tornadoes.  Please take some time to talk with your child about this drill.  The classroom teachers will do this, as well.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation in preparing our students and addressing their concerns.

Sincerely,

Kent Hawley

Superintendent
